If you have a pain in your tooth when you eat something sweet, you may have a dental cavity. If this is the case you should come to our practice, Lakehurst Dental, to see our Toms River best dentist for cavity treatment.
At our dental practice you will be able to choose from one of two different types of fillings. Our Toms River best dentist offers both traditional silver amalgam fillings as well as tooth-colored composite fillings for cavity treatment. Our dentist will recommend which type of cavity treatment will work best for you, generally based on the size and location of the cavity. Silver amalgam fillings are stronger than tooth-colored fillings although they are not as aesthetically pleasing. Silver amalgam fillings will last for many years, and are not as prone to cracking. This makes them a good material to use when a patient has a large cavity, or a cavity on the flat chewing surface of one of the back molars that needs to be able to withstand vigorous chewing forces. Tooth-colored composite fillings work well on front teeth where the filling will show when the patient speaks or smiles. Tooth-colored fillings are made to perfectly match the color of the tooth so they are virtually invisible to others. Tooth-colored fillings require that less of the tooth enamel is removed, and are actually bonded to the patient’s tooth. This makes these fillings better to use in many cases. However, they do take longer to apply. For this reason they may be more expensive so you will want to check with your dental insurance company to make sure that they cover this type of treatment. Additionally, composite fillings are not as strong and may not last as long as the silver amalgam filling will, and may actually chip or even crack.
